In 1963 the first Jejunocolic Bypass was performed, replacing barbaric procedures such as jaw wiring. The Jejunocolic Bypass was a type of bypass that rerouted and shortened the intestines creating weight loss by mal-absorption. Patients who had this procedure done would lose a substantial amount of weight in their first year after operation, but with complications. The complications were so severe that the procedure would be discontinued, and in 1969 the Jejunoileal Bypass was introduced. The first introduction of this procedure would be named Jejunoileostomy, and in 1976 a second revised version would be introduced. The revised version would be called jejunoileal bypass and caused extremely severe complications. The Jejunocolic Bypass was known to cause mal-absorption, and severe diarrhea, but its revised version, the jejunoileal bypass, caused a severe vitamin deficiency and neuropathy that would push the mortality rate to four percent. The jejunoileal bypass would then also be abandoned and in 1979 the Biliopancreatic Diversion would be performed, which would then later be converted to the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch in 1993. It is important to note that gastric banding would also be introduced in the late 70’s, and is still available today, but most surgeons will not perform it due to complications. The preferred m ethod of weight loss surgery used today is the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, which is the final form converted from the Jejunocolic Bypass, Jejunoileal bypass, and both forms of the Biliopancreatic Diversion. Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass is the most popular, and most used weight lost surgery option today. Most medical centers that are approved to perform weight loss surgery will only offer Roux-en-Y, and do not recommend the Gastric Band. Roux-en-Y is now done laparoscopically, although in some cases still done by opening the patient completely up. Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y requires only 6 incisions to be completed. Although minor incisions outwardly, it is still considered major surgery due to the nature of the internal stapling of the stomach. During surgery surgeons detach the stomach from the esophagus as well as the small intestines. They leave a small piece of stomach attached to the esophagus that they then re-attach to the small intestines which then creates a small pouch that is now the patients stomach. The rest of the stomach remains inside the body but is no longer used. After surgery patients are required to stay in the hospital or medical center for one to two days for observation. During this time and two weeks after surgery they are on a strict liquid diet. Patients will then be instructed by their doctor over the next few months on how to start the implementation of soft foods back to a normal solidity of food while the new stomach route heals. A substantial amount of weight will be lost during this time of transitioning for the patient. Gastric Bypass is recommended for patients who are obese, which is defined as those who carry a BMI (Body Mass Index) of forty or higher, or whose BMI is thirty-five and higher with complications or ailments caused by obesity. Obesity complications or ailments consist of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, joint or bone pain, and more severe complications such as type 2 diabetes, risk of stroke, and risk of heart attack. These complications are usually enough to make an obese person seek out treatment such as gastric bypass.

Have you ever sat back and observed the world around you with no sound? Watching people in their natural habitats, examining their every move. Today I went to the beach and observed a group of people through non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication is the act of communicating through wordless messages. Body language and other non-verbal cues are a larger portion of communication than most people assume. (pg. 78) I watched a group of people from afar and was not able to listen to their conversations, but I observed their body language. There was an elderly couple that appeared to be the head of the family. The woman was wearing a sunhat, a polo, and capris, while the man was wearing a Hawaiian shirt with board shorts, and a baseball cap. Sitting next to them was a woman in her thirties wearing a sundress with and extravagant sunhat, and a man in his late thirties, wearing a bathing suit with a baseball cap. Two children sat beside them playing in the sand. One of the children was a little girl who had strawberry blonde hair, freckles and pale skin, resembling the mother, and the other was a little boy with dark brown hair and olive colored skin, resembling the father. The girl looked to be about 5 years old and the boy about 8 years old. They all seemed to be enjoying the beautiful Rhode Island weather. The family that I was observing appeared to be of the Irish and Italian decent. I came to this assumption based on their physical characteristics. The little girl and her mother looked to be very Irish. They both had pale skin and many freckles with strawberry blonde hair. The father and son; on the other hand, appeared to be very Italian. They both had dark hair and tan skin. Both grandparents showed prominently Italian heritage, from their tan skin and hairy arms to their abundance of food that they brought in two large coolers. They had a wide variety of food, ranging from cold pizza to leftover lasagna. From observing this family I came to the assumption that they were a financially well off family. All of their beach chairs seemed brand new and well taken care of. They all had on high-end clothing and looked very put together. Both of the children had on Ralph Lauren bathing suits and numerous sand toys in heaping piles surrounding them. The first type of nonverbal communication I observed was called kinesics. Kinesics is communication that is sent by the body, such as gestures, posture, facial expressions and eye behavior. (pg. 82) The elderly couple seemed to be content with their day at the beach. They both sat up straight in their beach chairs and held hands. They seemed madly in love and kept glancing back at one another, keeping their gaze for a while and smiling. The little girl was sitting in the sand very focused on building a sand castle. She raised her arms in the air to her grandparents illustrating how tall the sand castle was going to be, until it started to fall over. The little boy ran eagerly back and forth to the water with his boogey board in hand, oblivious to the world around him. It was like he was one with the ocean, fully immersed in the waves. With the little boy acting so carefree, the mother was sitting on the edge of her chair watching him like a bald eagle mother watching over her young. Every now and then she would yell to her son, and point her finger as if she was gesturing to him not go out too far in the water. Unlike the mother, the father seemed very relaxed. He was lying back in his chair, taking in the warm sun, with not a care in the world. Everyone was looking around at the beautiful beach scenery and watching the world pass by. (pg. 83) The family sat in a circle, each with a beach chair and one huge rainbow umbrella. They were illustrating proxemics, which is defined as the space between each person. The grandmother and grandfather were displaying intimate distance. They were holding hands and openly portraying their affection towards one another. The little girl was building her sandcastle within social distance of her family. She did not want anyone to step on her masterpiece; therefor, she kept her distance but remained in earshot of the adults. The little boy, playing with his boogey board in the waves, was within public distance to his family. He was the farthest from them and was just out of earshot. The family as a whole was within personal distance. This means that they were all in vicinity where verbal or non-verbal interaction was possible. (pg. 86) Throughout the day the family used various haptics, which are ways that communication can be made through touch. While the little boy was running back to his mother, he tripped over his boogey board and fell, scraping his knee on a seashell. The lifeguard came running to the rescue with his First-Aid kit when he saw the little boy clutching his leg and what appeared to be crying out for help. The lifeguard cleaned and bandaged the little boy’s leg, using professional touch. This type of touch is used by professional in their place of work. As soon as the lifeguard was finished caring for the boy, the father approached him and shook his hand. The father was showing an example of social-polite touch by openly expressing his gratitude and shaking the lifeguard’s hand. After the little boy calmed down, the mother made sure to apply more sunblock to both of her children, and as she finished she gave each of them a kiss on the forehead before sending them back to play. As both children scurried off, their proud parents stood embracing one another. Both of these interactions displayed love-intimate touch, which is something that is often used in families and with romantic partners to portray their affection for one another. (pg. 89) By spending time together on the beach the family was demonstrating chronemics. This time seemed really important and valuable to them, which sent me a subliminal message that they were a loving and close-knit family. (pg. 85) Laughter and smiles were constantly being exchanged throughout the day. They were a polychronic family, in the way that they were always engaging in multiple activities simultaneously. (pg. 86) The children built sand castles and road the waves in the ocean. They were constantly running back and forth from the ocean to the sand castle, waving their arms in the air and looked as though they were screeching at the top of their lungs. In between running back and forth from the ocean, the children and adults ate their lunch. While the children were eating, a seagull flew down and tried to snatch the little boys pizza. Out of fear, the little boy tossed it at the seagull. While the seagull was aggressively attacking the food, another group of these birds flocked towards the food in an attempt to steal it away. Immediately the father jumped to the rescue and shooed away the seagulls by flailing his arms. They all found this attack to be very amusing, because as soon as the seagulls flew away they gathered together and were throwing their heads back, appearing to be laughing at the misfortunate situation. In conclusion, observing people through non-verbal communication was really interesting. I learned a lot about the non-verbal communications that occur between families and people in general. I observed kinesics between the families, the loving gaze of the two grandparents, the kids were busy focused on their play, and the parents were there relaxing. I also observed the non-verbal use of space in proxemics. The family sat closely and in close proximity, in a very intimate fashion. The final aspect I witnessed was that of haptics, communication through touch. The family acted in loving touching way, the mother was applying sunscreen and the mother and father shared a warm embrace. I saw the full spectrum of non-verbal communication on the beach that day. I found this interesting because I’ve never sat back and watched the interactions between people from afar or focused solely on the non-verbal communication instead of their verbal communication between a group of people. I learned a lot about non-verbal communication from watching this particular family enjoying their day at the beach. It was intriguing because there were a lot of similarities between the non-verbal communication that I saw and what I had originally anticipated. The biggest reason is that 7th grade ACT scores are an integral part of several talent search programs, like Duke TIP and Johns Hopkins' CTY. These programs provide academic enrichment and summer programs for advanced students, which can be a great way to discover a subject you're passionate about that you can then pursue in more depth in high school or college. The only other real reason to take the ACT so early is if you want to start laying the groundwork for when you take the ACT in high school to apply to colleges. Because you won't have learned a significant chunk of the content on the test yet in school (particularly on the math section), you're probably not going to want to use your 7th grade ACT score to apply to colleges. But if you live in an ACT-mandatory state and will end up taking the ACT before you graduate from high school for free anyway, it's not the worst idea in the world to get an early preview of what the test is like. 7th Grade ACT Prep for Summer Programs If you’re taking the ACT to take part in a talent search or summer program of some sort, you have a relatively tight timeline to work with. Enrollment begins August of each year for Duke TIP and other similar programs, and to do the 7th grade talent search for most programs, you must take the ACT during your 7th grade year. This means that the latest you can take the ACT and still qualify for a talent search is by June of the end of your 7th grade school year. Plus, to get a spot in the highly competitive summer programs for the summer after 7th grade, it’s usually recommended you take the ACT by Feb 1st during 7th grade at the latest (so you don’t get waitlisted for the programs). With a short amount of time to study for the ACT, you'll need to use strategies similar to those used by juniors and seniors prepping for the test. This means studying for the test with official ACT practice tests and questions to get the most accurate picture of what will be covered on the real test. While you by no means need a perfect or even close to perfect score on the ACT in order to qualify for summer programs, you also don't want to stroll into the room on test day and be completely surprised by the format and question style of the test. Jon Bunting/Flickr There are non-multiple choice Math questions You're also going to want to take at least a couple of realistic timed practice tests (rather than just answering questions or doing the test a section at a time). This exercise is particularly valuable for 7th graders because as a younger student, you'll likely have less test-taking stamina, simply because you won't have had as many years of lengthy test-taking in school yet as a high school student. The ACT is a little over three hours long with breaks (or almost four hours if you take ACT with Writing), so you'll need to work up to being able to sit down and concentrate on the test for that long a period of time without losing focus. Other ACT prep strategies used by high school students can be modified and used by younger students as well. Before you start studying for the test, you should figure out what specific score you need to aim for in order to meet your goals. Rather than averaging the average scores of the colleges you want to get into, you should set your target ACT score based on the average scores of the summer programs you want to apply to. You can then adjust your test-taking strategy accordingly. The most important adjustment to make to your test-taking strategy as a 7th grader is to not be afraid to skip questions. If you only need to aim for a 25 on each section, you can afford to skip the harder questions or topics you haven't learned about yet and maximize the time you spend on questions you actually can answer. Early Training for College Applications Starting to prepare for college applications early is a much weaker reason to study for and take the ACT in 7th grade. Prepping so early for the ACT means you don't have the content knowledge you need to do your best on the test. While it is possible to teach yourself some of the content, you may find that there's ultimately a limit to what you can achieve on your own without first learning the subject (like trig) in school first. It's also unlikely that casual 7th grade ACT prep will have any benefit for you when you get to the middle of high school and take it again for colleges. Sure, you might be slightly more familiar with the format of the test, but that's something you could achieve much more easily and effectively by starting to prep for the ACT in a focused way in 9th grade. And as a sidenote, although colleges probably won't care about your 7th grade ACT score, any time you take the ACT it does technically remain on your permanent ACT record. The good news is that if you want to take the ACT early as part of preparing to apply to college or pass the ACT later on in high school, you have a much looser timeframe to work with than if you needed to take it for a talent search. Since you don't have program deadlines, you can take the ACT at any point during middle school, whether during the 7th grade school year or not. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to take the test again before college applications, so it's not like your score now is final. Your 7th grade ACT score is about as final as this rabbit drawn in the sand. Unlike the juniors taking the test, you won't have learned all of the content yet in school, and as I said above, some of it you might not be able to teach yourself. Instead of banging your head against the wall of radians and matrices, you should focus your studying on areas like Reading and English, which don't necessarily require the same kind of knowledge base that ACT Math does, particularly if you're a native English speaker. For ACT Reading, you can practice reading at a higher level by reading short stories and nonfiction writing. You can also use vocabulary lists to bolster your knowledge of more advanced vocab and how to use them in context. The ACT Science test doesn't require a lot of specific science knowledge. Instead, you'll need to be skilled at reading charts, graphs, and tables and being able to combine information from them and the text to answer questions. For this reason, even students who aren't "science" people can do perfectly well on ACT Science. And when it comes to ACT Math, you can at least start to get familiar with the math you haven't covered yet in school with our great guides to subjects like algebra and trigonometry. For the most part, though, while you can start to prep for the ACT in 7th grade, if the only reason you're studying for it is as prep for college applications, we don't recommend taking it that early. If you're taking it in order to qualify for summer programs, you’ll have less time to study before taking the test, so you should focus on practicing with real ACTs and studying strategies like skipping questions you can't answer. On the other hand, if your 7th grade ACT prep isearly training for college or high school, you’ll have more time to study before taking the test, so you should focus more on learning content you don’t know and getting familiar with the test structure before moving on to testing strategies and full-length practice tests. Above all, don’t be discouraged by a low 7th grade ACT score. Remember, you’re competing against high school juniors and seniors who are taking this test to get into college or graduate high school. These students might approach the ACT more seriously because it’s more important to their future college prospects, spend more time prepping or have prepped in school, and generally know more of the content because of having covered it in school repeatedly.
